Fashion Must Commit to Sustainable Practices to Mitigate the Growing Waste Crisis

Woman Vivian Hunt Tells Summit attended by Tommy Hilfiger and Kris Jenner of Fashion's Overproduction Crisis

One of the top economists in the UK has warned that the fashion industry is facing an existential crisis from waste and overproduction if it doesn't change its ways.

Lady Vivian Hunt said: "It has a far way to go to show respect for achieving net-zero emissions come what may." She is a senior partner at McKinsey and Company.

Hunt, the American said to be one of the most powerful ethnic minorities in Britain and a leading figure in the City of London, cited recent research estimating upwards of 12% of fibers hit the factory floor.

High overproduction was also highlighted, with a large 45% of garments being sold at discounted prices.

Hunt is speaking at the Business of Fashion Voices conference in Oxfordshire, dubbed the COP26 of fashion for its importance. She has joined leaders in the industry including Tommy Hilfiger and Kris Jenner, who was watching from the front row in true style boss fashion.

Speaking to the crowd, Hunt reiterated that sustainability needed to be veneer-like, but something deeper. "Perfection is an elusive goal, but progress is achievable." The sixth year of Voices has welcomed a long list of big speakers, from Stella McCartney and Alber Elbaz. It is hailed for raising some of the most critical discussions in fashion in the past decade.
